I love and regularly play some of the real Earth maps created by modders and available via Steam Workshop, particularly Greatest Earth Map from modder Gedemon.

For example, playing in True Start Location mode TSLwhich places a civilization in its geographically and historically correct location, is a problem if you want to play as England or Japan, as those islands are tiny. The south coast of England is only three tiles wide in the built-in map, compared to eight tiles on Greatest Earth Map. This is the difference between creating two tightly packed cities in Britain, or four, well-spaced cities with room to sprawl and grow.

Real world TSL maps allow me to tinker with history. Beginning with the city of London, I succeeded in colonizing the north of England and Ireland, while subduing a city state in Wales. Historical realism was provided by my neighbors: I held off ransom demands from the Vikings as well as intense French hostility. In time, I settled the Atlantic seaboard of North America, and expanded across Canada, extinguishing the northern expansion of the Aztecs, which had previously overtaken the native Cree around the Great Lakes.

During this time, I made myself extremely unpopular with rival leaders, and was in a state of constant war. I was unable to take India, because it had become a highly advanced civilization which dwarfed my own. All of this has some historical resonance. It was a great challenge and a ton of fun. But it was only partially true to history.

Also, the British relied on small naval stations scattered around the world, such as Singapore, Hong Kong, and Gibraltar. In other games, I created a highly advanced South American Inca civilization, which steadfastly refused to expand outside its own continent, but which won the game by focusing on technology.

I also played as Japan, creating a pan-Asian empire that expanded exclusively through cultural dominance. Can Persia roll over Greece and dominate the Mediterranean?

What if the Aztecs did defeat the Europeans and became the first nation into space? Likewise the Sahara should have plentiful oases, a few plains tiles, and some of the hills there should be exaggerated into mountains. Modder Gedemon got into the scene because of a love of giant maps. These maps were packaged up into a set of Earth maps. Gedemon concedes that large maps can be a problem for players with slower PCs, especially late in games.

Stability issues are exacerbated in larger maps. Some map conversions from early Civ games are currently susceptible to crashes, a consequence of the release of the most recent expansion Gathering Storm. Gedemon makes changes to his maps, according to feedback from players. Still, these maps are recognizably Earth. It gives your empires some room to breathe and grow.

It allows you to play against multiple civilizations in tight, competitive areas like Europe, or to focus on growing in more open spaces. Players can create neglected geographic areas, such as a home state or a favorite country, or the lands of a beloved fantasy novel. Daniel Quick is a host of Polycasta strategy podcast for Civilization games.

But you can play as different civilizations, or start in different locations, or give yourself different challenges. One of the best things about playing a real-world map is the option to choose opposing civilizations. Clearly, playing as the United States of America is a very different experience if the Cree, Canadians, Aztecs, and all South American leaders are in play, as well as multiple city states like Cahokia and Toronto.

Now that World Builder is out there, new and interesting maps are likely to become more common, giving Civilization 6 new life in the time between now, and the next game in the series. In Civilization 6every decision matters.

This ranges from choosing a civilization to play and the victory type to the best Civ 6 district placements and more. Of course, picking the civilization and leader is the first major choice. Yet defining a civilization as OP is not as simple as it sounds. There's quite a few civilizations that stand out from the rest to some degree, but ultimately that balances comes in when pitted against other civilizations. As such, when considering the variety of leaders in Civilization 6whether one can classify as OP or not comes down to a few deciding factors: how they compare to other civilizations, how quickly they can lock in a victory or the versatility they have, and how if in any way they change the game.

Seondeok of Korea is a hard hitter, although there's really not much versatility here. However, what she lacks there is made up in possibility the fastest victory style in the game. Playing Seondeok requires a little know-how and some early in-game setup and preparation, but this leader can earn a science victory in Civilization 6 before other players knew what hit them. This quick, effective, and core strategy outclassing many other civilizations earns Korea an OP spot. Mansa Musa of Mali can basically do it all and is fittingly led by who many historians believe to be the richest man of all time when adjusted properly.

His focus on gold in game then comes as no surprise, and Mansa's wealth alone changes how Civilization 6 is played with him on the map or as him for victory. Mansa Musa marks both versatility and specialization, with a religious victory in Civ 6 being the easiest to achieve but all of them being certainly viable with the sheer amount of gold that can be obtained. It also changes the game up considerably, as typically civs focus on production to get out units, districts, and more, but Mali can simply buy most of them.

Focusing on Gold and Faith puts Mali ahead of his competitionat times being capable of buying an entire army in one turn. That's made even better with proper planning near a desert and a holy site, and almost right away, Mansa Musa changes the name of the game, earning his OP spot. What Alexander of Macedon lacks in versatility, he makes up in being the absolute war machine of Civilization 6.

Players who need to earn a domination victory should always opt for Alexander, hands own, as his military is second to none. The biggest hurdle to this victory type in Civ 6 is war wearinessbut none of Alexander's cities will incur this penalty. Then, on top of that, all of his units heal after capturing a city.Log in or Sign up. CivFanatics Forums. Could be my personality I was totally addicted to Diablo II, playing 6 hours a day for 4 years until Recently I discovered the World Builder option, and I love it.

What I cannot seem to figure out is this How do you use World Builder for Multiplayer games? I've been playing a few LAN games, and I would really like to be able to setup a LAN game with my best friend, where we could add a few resource bonus close to the city. On a somewhat related issue, is there a way to turn off the mini-map in world builder? My preferred use for the World Builder is to add a Fish, Crab, and Clam next to my starting position, and have the mini-map covered up city an envelope right now Anyhow FirstDownMageMar 8, The world builder is disabled in multiplayer to prevent cheating.

Terahamer below me is correct, though. WejerMar 9, You could prepare a custom map and play that one. TeraHammerMar 9, Joined: Feb 4, Messages: 9. I tried several times to create a 'custom map' to use in multiplayer games. Would also like to make a multiplayer map with islands that are not too small nor too big about big enough to fit cities on; 3 cramped cities or 2 large cities.

Also would like to be able to ensure that all off-shore oil is available we've had some random maps that placed some of the off-shore oil resource outside of the reach of large city cultures or next ICE where you could nto build on, making the resource useless.

We've actually had lots of inaccessbile clams and fish. Biggest desire is to make a map multiplayer that does not use 'useless terrain tiles, such as ICE, yet stil has tropics, deserts, etc. How do I do that. Any customized maps I've tried to create with World Builder, cannot be found when I try to load the multiplayer game. I'd like to be able to create a map with nothing but resources and terrain no civilizations or civilization starting points.

This way, when you start a mulitplayer game, civilization starting points could be totally random and the number of civilizations would be deterimine by the number selected in the game play menu. The same would go for barbarians whether or not you chose to have them in the game. Does it take a special program to do this and if so, where can it be found. The 'random maps' generated by game are 'boring' to say the least It might be interesting to create a multiplayer map, where everyone starts on the same large land area with plenty on smaller land areas and islands also located on the map.

Yuo would either need to mominate the larger land mass, or expand off of it tobuild your civilization somewhre else.Home Discussions Workshop Market Broadcasts. Change language. Install Steam. He was also very kind to other travellers who realized he was a guide and would stop him to ask advice. Although this was to be my only trip to Scotland, thanks to his influence and fascinating instruction on the Highlands and Highlanders, I know I need to see more.

I would let Nordic Visitor give more advice on the tour must sees. We met with the Edinburgh office staff - Maria, Anna, and Kris - after our tour was done, again Brian going above and beyond to bring us to meet them, days after our tour was over.

I cannot say enough good things about all the help they gave us. Even though we did not have the opportunity to meet with Helga in person we felt extremely well looked after by all her hard work and planning before and during the trip, and would completely recommend her and the Nordic Visitor team, you are all wonderful.

We would have loved to drop by the office to tell you in person how much fun we were having but we squeezed in extra activities so didn't end up having time to do so. We had asked for a tailored trip which was a day longer than the tour on the website, and Helga organised this effortlessly.

We also requested a combination of comfort and superior rooms and again she organised this with no trouble. The comfort rooms were pretty nice to stay in, occasionally having hot-tubs outside and always delicious food at their restaurants. The superior rooms we stayed at were incredibly memorable and really completed our honeymoon experience. It was the most fantastic honeymoon we could have imagined, thank you so much for organising it for us.

We travelled as a family of two adults and one child and organised our combined tours 'Tale of Four cities' Scandinavian capitals and 'Iceland Full Circle' from afar totally online. The online experience went extremely smoothly. Our consultant, Sirry, was very helpful and responsive. She communicated well and with his prior to our arrival and when we arrived at our first destination everything was well arranged and ran very smoothly - the transfers, the hotels, the ferries, the car hire.

The comprehensive package of maps, brochures and information books provided was a fabulous resource. GPS was included in our hire cars and this was essential. We also had access to a mobile phone that was provided and this was very comforting in case there were any problems.

We did not use it as there were no issues that needed resolution during our combined tours. As a family of three we had an absolutely fantastic time travelling through Scandinavia and Iceland.

Our experience was greatly influenced by the service and organisation of Nordic Visitor. I will highly recommend your services to anyone that I know who wishes to visit the Nordic region.
